New Zealand is Paving the Way for Heli-Biking Globally

The rest of the world is following NZ’s example for Heli-Biking. But what is it?

For the locals of New Zealand, Heli-biking is another sport on the long list of activities to do in the mountains. Many Wanaka, Queenstown, and North Island locals may not realise how unique it is that we can facilitate our big mountain desires so readily.

The industry and sport of heli-biking has populated rapidly in New Zealand over the past 11+ years, setting the example for other countries to follow. In the last 7 years, Canada’s Whistler Mountain introduced Heli-biking, starting the trend for other Canadian resorts. And in 2017 the United States got their first Heli-biking company at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in Alaska.
Slowly, North American resorts are trading snow for dirt, utilising their winter aviation equipment and local mountain knowledge to develop Heli-biking abroad.

With this growing popularity overseas, and New Zealand being the threshold of heli-biking standard, it may leave some people wondering just what is heli-biking? And can anyone do it?

What is Helibiking?

Helibiking is the use of a helicopter to reach otherwise inaccessible terrain. It also offers you the opportunity for a scenic flight in the mountains and ensures your endurance (and legs) are saved for the downhill.

A specially made bike rack attaches to the side of the helicopter which is used to safely load your bikes whilst all other equipment goes into the helicopter with you - meaning you can bring your camera along for the ride.

Your pilot will drop you and your group at the top of the trails, ready for you to start the descent (or lakefront cruise if that’s more your style).

That’s where it may stop for some companies, but not for Southern Lakes Helibike. We’re not in the business of helicopter-Uber. We want to ensure that you are getting value out of your biking experience.

To do so, we work exclusively with our sister company, Alpine Helicopters, to provide a premium flight experience with a modern fleet of helicopters and highly experienced pilots. This way you can enjoy the scenic views on the commute and the adventure starts at the morning take-off.

We also want to make sure everyone makes it down the mountain safely and with a smile, having enjoyed every minute of the ride. We continue to provide unrivalled service offered by our guides and tailor-made products. You can heli-bike at any experience level with confidence, knowing that our guides have created a day suited to you and your group's ability level.

Not only do you have a personal guide leading you down the mountain, but you will also have your snacks and meals catered for. If you’re enjoying the half-day experience, our guides will provide you with a delicious mid-morning fuel break, and if you’re going for the full-day package, then a full complimentary lunch will be prepared for you to enjoy (save the squished banana in your bag for another day).
